As an Andorran who practically learned to walk with skis on, I know exactly what you're looking for when you check the resort map, discarding the green areas.

If you have the technique and want to burn some quads, you've come to the right place to discover the best slopes for experts in Grandvalira.

In this article, I'll break down the black runs in Grandvalira 2026 that are truly worthwhile and those challenging red runs in Andorra that will put your edges to the test. Get your gear ready, because we're going to slide down the most demanding trails of our home.

The extreme skiing paradise in Soldeu and El Tarter

Grandvalira is not only the largest ski area in Southern Europe. It's a spectacular playground for extreme skiing in Soldeu, El Tarter and the high areas of Pas de la Casa.

Here you'll find everything from maximum gradient walls to approved competition stadiums. As locals, we know that when the snow is perfect (our famous Andorran hard-packed powder), there's nothing like launching yourself down these slopes before they get crowded.

A wide shot of snow-covered mountain peaks and valleys under a clear blue sky with a bright sun. The landscape shows vast expanses of white snow and some dark patches of evergreen trees in the distance.

The best black runs in Grandvalira (For the brave only)

If you're looking for maximum inclination, Grandvalira's black runs don't forgive position errors.

Avet Slope (Soldeu): The jewel of FIS Downhill

  • Name: Avet
  • Sector: Soldeu
  • Level: Black FIS (International Ski Federation)
  • Length: 1.2 km
  • Technical difficulty: Maximum. Very steep and demanding central wall.
  • Local tip: The best descent is first thing in the morning, freshly groomed.

The Avet is our national pride and a regular venue for the World Cup Finals. Its FIS downhill has a central wall that is a brutal technical challenge. Linking short turns here without skidding gives you direct access to the après-ski.

Àliga Slope (El Tarter): Speed and vertigo

  • Name: Àliga
  • Sector: El Tarter
  • Level: Black FIS (Downhill and Super-G)
  • Length: 2.7 km
  • Technical difficulty: High. Rolling terrain and high-speed turns.
  • Local tip: Watch out for the final jump before reaching the village.

If the Avet is technical, the Àliga is all about speed. From the top, the view is breathtaking. It has rolling terrain that requires you to stay flexed and always one step ahead of the slope.

Antenes and Riberal (Grau Roig): Vertical walls

  • Name: Antenes and Riberal
  • Sector: Grau Roig
  • Level: Black
  • Length: Short (approx. 800m)
  • Technical difficulty: Very High. Extreme inclination.
  • Local tip: Ideal for warming up before trying the Speed Skiing.

Located in the wildest area of the resort. These are slopes with maximum gradient walls that force you to dig in your edges with absolute aggression.

Red runs in Grandvalira to push your technique

The challenging red runs in Andorra can surprise more than one. They have sections that, with hard snow, almost reach black run category.

Llop and Miquel: Constant demand

  • Name: Llop (El Tarter) / Miquel (Grau Roig)
  • Sector: El Tarter / Grau Roig
  • Level: Red
  • Characteristics: Llop is ideal for extreme carving at high speed. Miquel winds through the forest with blind changes in gradient.
  • Local tip: Miquel is perfect on blizzard days, as the trees protect the slope.

Local tips for mastering these descents

Maintaining safety in extreme skiing is vital in our home. Note this:

  • Sharpen those edges: On the Avet, the snow is often injected. Edges at 88º or 87º are non-negotiable.
  • Strategic timings: The black runs are best tackled between 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM.
  • Warm-up: Never go down the Àliga cold. Use Andorra's blue warm-up runs first.

Plan your extreme skiing getaway

After conquering the black runs, you'll need to regain your strength. Check our general guide to plan your trip and make sure to choose a good base of operations.

Being close to the lifts is vital for early risers. Check the best accommodations in Andorra and look for recommended options in our sleeping section for ski-in/ski-out in Soldeu or El Tarter.

Additionally, if you're traveling in a group, stay connected on the international slopes with internet and eSIMs in Andorra. And to celebrate a great day of descents, book a table at the best restaurants in the country for après-ski.
