What is Andorraand what to know on your first visit

A small mountain country between Spain and France, with seven parishes, the euro, and Catalan. Understand it in five minutes and plan your first trip step-by-step: how to get there, where to stay, and what to do.

WHAT IS ANDORRA

What is Andorra: a Pyrenean country between Spain and France

Andorra is an independent country, not a region of Spain or France. It is in the heart of the Pyrenees, has 468 km² of mountains and about 90,000 inhabitants spread across seven parishes, and its capital is Andorra la Vella. It is a co-principality: its two heads of state are the Bishop of Urgell and the President of the French Republic. Since 1993, it has had its own Constitution and is a member of the UN, and it is governed by its parliament, the Consell General, and its own Government.

It is not part of the European Union or the Schengen area, but it uses the euro thanks to a monetary agreement with the EU. The official language is Catalan, and Spanish and French are commonly spoken.

BEFORE YOU COME

What to know before traveling to Andorra

If you come from the EU, you enter with a valid ID card or passport. Check your mobile phone plan, as European roaming does not apply. And if you come during high season, book accommodation, Caldea, and activities in advance. From November 1st to May 15th, cars must have winter tires or chains, and in your luggage, pack layers, a coat, and snow footwear.

ARRIVAL DAY

How to get to Andorra and where to stay

Andorra has no airport or train: you arrive by road, from Spain via La Farga de Moles or from France via Pas de la Casa. You can come by car, by bus from Barcelona, Lleida, or Toulouse, or with Move, the car with a driver that picks you up at the airport or station and drops you off at your hotel. For a first visit, staying in Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany puts you within walking distance of the shops and Caldea.

YOUR FIRST DAY

What to do on your first day in Andorra

Start with the capital: the Barri Antic, the Casa de la Vall, the old seat of the Consell General, and Meritxell Avenue, which continues to Carlemany Avenue in Escaldes-Engordany. In the afternoon, Caldea; at night, the illuminated center with a guide. With the slopes open, swap the afternoon for snow: snowshoeing or snowmobiling in Grau Roig.

DAY 2 ONWARDS

If you stay longer: choose your plan

With a second day, you can reach the northern parishes and the mountains. Choose based on how many days you have, who you're traveling with, or what you like most.
