What via ferratas are there in Canillo?
Canillo has four equipped routes: Canal de la Mora (with two variants), Roc del Quer, Racons, and Roc del Gos. All are freely accessible and are concentrated in two sectors: the entrance to the village, on the large wall of Roc del Quer, and the beginning of the road to the Ordino pass.
Via ferrata | Difficulty | Distance | Elevation gain | Approx. duration | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Canal de la Mora I and II | Easy | 400 m | +200 m | Up to 3 h | Beginners and first-timers |
Roc del Quer | Moderate | 500 m | +350 m | 2 h 55 min (the route) | With previous experience |
Roc del Gos | Medium | 120 m | +100 m | 1 h 15 min | Introduction for physically fit individuals |
Racons | Difficult | 400 m | +210 m | 3–6 h | Experts only |
With this table, you can already rule out options based on your level. Below, each route in detail.
Canal de la Mora, the ideal option for beginners
If you've never done a via ferrata, Canal de la Mora is the benchmark for starting in Canillo: low difficulty, simple progression, and an authentic mountain environment without technical commitment.
Technical sheet
- Difficulty: easy
- Distance: 400 m
- Elevation gain: +200 m / −200 m
- Duration: up to 3 hours
- Orientation: southeast
- Average height: approximately 1,700 m
- Access: free, no escape routes
What the experience is like
The via is divided into two routes, Canal de la Mora I and II, which allows choosing the path according to your fitness level on the day. Depending on the time of year, it is possible to find water or ice in the gully, a factor to consider outside the warmer months. As there are no escape routes, you must be sure to complete the route before entering.
How to get there
It is located at the beginning of the Ordino pass road, in the parish of Canillo. Before setting off, it is advisable to visit the Canillo Tourist Office to confirm that access is open, as mountain gullies can be temporarily closed due to rockfalls or maintenance.
Roc del Quer, Canillo's most spectacular via ferrata
Roc del Quer is the benchmark via ferrata in Canillo for those with experience: 500 meters long, 350 meters of elevation gain, and a very aerial progression through the center of the large wall that dominates the entrance to the town from Escaldes-Engordany.
Technical sheet
- Difficulty: moderate
- Distance: 500 m
- Elevation gain/loss: +350 m / −350 m
- Duration: approach 5 min · via 2 h 55 min · return 40 min
- Orientation: southeast
- Summit altitude: 1,920 m
- Access: free
What makes it different
The via ascends without escape routes through the center of the wall and includes a spectacular traverse at mid-height. It is a clearly exposed via ferrata: if vertigo is a problem, this is not your route. A practical option is to leave a second car at the end of the via to descend by road instead of walking back.

Combine it with the viewpoint
The Roc del Quer is not just the via ferrata wall: at its top is the , one of Andorra's most famous balconies. The via ferrata in the morning and the viewpoint afterwards is a very common full-day combination.
Racons and Roc del Gos: intermediate and expert level
Racons: for experts only
The Racons via ferrata is designed exclusively for experts. It is located a short distance from the center of Canillo, in the Roc del Quer sector, and its route is exceptionally vertical.
- Difficulty: difficult
- Distance: 400 m
- Elevation gain/loss: +210 m / −210 m
- Duration: 3–6 hours
- Access: free

To get there from Andorra la Vella, take General Road 2 towards France until Canillo. The car can be left in any of the public car parks in the town; from the Tourist Office, walk about 10 minutes along the CG-2 to the start of the approach path.
Roc del Gos: the intermediate level option
Roc del Gos, managed by the Comú de Canillo, is a short, medium-difficulty via located in the Canal de Mora area:
- Difficulty: medium
- Length: 120 m
- Elevation gain/loss: 100 m
- Orientation: east
- Final altitude: 1,580 m
- Approximate time: 1 h 15 min · return 25 min
Its first section is common with the Canal de Mora routes, and at the end of the route there is a non-mandatory 85-meter abseil that allows descending to the start. Access is from the Canillo–Ordino road (N-240), at kilometer 1.
What difficulty level does each via ferrata in Canillo have?
The right choice depends on three factors: previous via ferrata experience, tolerance to exposure, and physical condition.
Your profile | Recommended via ferrata | Why |
|---|---|---|
You've never done a via ferrata | Canal de la Mora (or guided beginner's outing) | Low difficulty, simple progression |
You've done several easy via ferratas | Roc del Gos / Canal de la Mora II | Intermediate step before exposed routes |
Solid experience and no vertigo | Roc del Quer | Aerial traverse, no escape routes |
Expert level | Racons | Extreme verticality, demanding technique |
Self-assessment checklist before entering Roc del Quer:
- I have completed at least several easy or medium-level via ferratas.
- I can spend more than 2 hours on the wall without fatigue compromising my technique.
- Exposure to heights does not affect my movement or concentration.
- I master the progression by alternating the two carabiners without ever unclipping.
If you fail two or more points, the correct decision is Canal de la Mora or a guided outing.
Do I need a guide to do a via ferrata in Andorra?
It is not mandatory: the via ferratas in Canillo are freely accessible. But free does not mean risk-free, and the difference between going independently and booking with a guide is substantial.
Go independently | Guided outing |
|---|---|
You need your own complete and checked equipment | Technical equipment included (harness, helmet, lanyards with energy absorber) |
You must know the progression technique and the use of the energy absorber | The guide teaches and corrects the technique en route |
You choose the route, with the risk of choosing the wrong level | The guide selects the appropriate route for the group |
No support if something goes wrong | Certified professional responsible for safety |
Lower cost if you already have equipment | Fixed price per person, all-inclusive |
The most underestimated item is the energy absorber: it is the element that absorbs energy in case of a fall, and using it incorrectly (or not carrying it) turns a small fall into a serious accident. If you have never used it, a first guided outing is the sensible way to learn.
What equipment do I need for a via ferrata?
Essential:
- Certified climbing harness
- Helmet
- Via ferrata set with energy absorber and two carabiners
- Mountain footwear with good grip
Recommended:
- Via ferrata gloves (protect from staples and cable)
- Small backpack with water and some food
- Windbreaker layer, even in summer: you are at an altitude of over 1,500 m

If you book a guided tour, technical equipment is included: you only need appropriate footwear, comfortable clothing, and water.
What is the best time of year to do via ferrata in Canillo?
The via ferrata season in Andorra is concentrated in the snow-free months. In cold periods, it's possible to find water or ice on routes like Canal de la Mora, which significantly increases difficulty and risk. Before heading out, and especially at the beginning and end of the season, check the access status at the Canillo Tourist Office: the channels can be temporarily closed due to rockfalls or maintenance.
Basic safety tips:
- Check all equipment before entering the route, not in the parking lot.
- Always keep at least one carabiner anchored to the cable.
- Do not overtake other users on equipped sections.
- Check the day's weather forecast: a storm on the wall is a serious scenario.
- If the weather changes or someone in the group gets stuck, the correct decision is to turn back while it's still possible.
Common beginner mistakes:
- Underestimating the elevation gain: +200 m on a wall is not like 200 m walking.
- Wearing running shoes instead of boots or approach shoes.
- Not carrying enough water for 3 hours of activity.
- Starting with Roc del Quer "because it's the most famous."

If you prefer not to worry about equipment, technique, or route selection, you can book a via ferrata outing with a professional guide.
